new work: 2025: Disintegration series
Inspired by the marks made in my painting “Glass Ceilings IV” and listening to “The disintegration loops” by William basinski in the studio.
I’m currently creating a series of smaller paintings (35x25cm) on canvas using gesso, french chalk, acrylic, graphite and tissue paper. this is an emergent exploration into the joy of applying materials, manipulating them, tearing into them, vigorously rubbing out, exposing and hiding details and in that, creating something beautiful, in balance and serene.
New work: 2025: Glass ceilings series
“A glass ceiling is a metaphor usually applied to women, used to represent an invisible barrier that prevents a given demographic from rising beyond a certain level in a hierarchy. The metaphor was first used by feminists in reference to barriers in the careers of high-achieving women.”
In my work I’m using the metaphor a little differently. The concept of a ‘glass ceiling’ relates to human beings feeling trapped, contained, wanting freedom, and seeing potential for freedom beyond the current dictates. In this series I am exploring differing and changing perspectives of ‘Glass ceilings’ from the viewers first subjective awareness to the experience of stretching beyond it…I’ve noticed that there are many paths towards an embodied sense of one’s potential for limitlessness.
